Equipment

  • 1 High speed blender I use a Vitamix
  • 1 Stone grain mill I use a Nutrimill
  • 1 Fine mesh sieve
  • 2 Mixing bowls

Ingredients

  • 1 lb dry chickpeas

Instructions

Method 1 - Blender Only

  • Put chickpeas in high power blender and turn on (be prepared for the extremely loud noise of the chickpeas knocking around). This loud noise will soon go away once the chickpeas have begun to disintegrate. Blend at high speed until the chickpeas have begun to turn into powder. Don't run the blender too long however (say more than 30 seconds at a time), because the chickpeas will heat up and start to cook.

  • Place the sieve over a bowl and dump the the contents into sieve. Sift the blended chickpeas through the sieve. Whatever is left in the sieve, return to blender and repeat the process

  • Stop repeating when only the chickpea skins remains in the sieve (you can see from the appearance). Discard skins.

Method 2 - Grain Mill Only

  • Turn on the grain mill and pour the garbanzo beans in the hopper. This method works well. The grain mill will not get the flour as hot as with the blender.
    grinding chickpeas
  • The issue with this method is it is slow. It takes awhile for the whole chickpeas to pass through the mill. This problem is remedied with the next method for making garbanzo bean flour.
  • Once the garbanzo beans have passed through the stone mill, the gram flour still needs to be sifted through a fine mesh sieve to remove the skins. After sifting, your chickpea flour is ready to go

Method 3 - Combo Blender/Grain Mill

  • This last method for making garbanzo bean flour is the one that I prefer because it combines the benefits of using the blender and the stone grain mill. First, put the chickpeas into the blender and blend until the chickpeas are small pieces. This is fast, so you don't have to worry about raising the temperature of the chickpea flour too high.

  • Now pour these roughly blended chickpeas into the hopper of the grain mill. Milling these roughly blended chickpeas will be substantially faster than milling whole chickpeas, so it will save you a lot of time.

  • Now proceed as with method 2. After milling the chickpeas, pass through a fine mesh sieve.
