Whipped Honey

What is Whipped Honey?

Whipped honey is … honey that’s been whipped. Simple as that. The whipping process introduces air into the honey – which changes the consistency and color of the honey. Whipped honey is light and velvety, not as syrupy like unwhipped honey.

The consistency of whipped honey is much better for spreading or dipping. While you can spread normal honey on toast or a biscuit, whipped honey spreads much creamier. You can keep your liquid honey for other purposes like adding as an ingredient to a recipe, and use the whipped honey for spreading purposes.

It is a great way to use crystalized honey that would be difficult to use otherwise. The whipping process will break down the crystals and result in a perfectly smooth end result.

How to Make Whipped Honey

Making whipped honey is very simple. In fact, whipping the honey is the only step!

If there are large crystals in the honey or it is very cold, you can warm the honey up first. The simplest way to do this is to first make sure that the lid to your honey jar is screwed on tight. Then put the jar under hot running water. Let it sit for about a minute. You can tell when the honey is warming up by turning the jar upside down and observing how the honey moves. If it moves more quickly like a thin syrup, it is getting warm. If it moves very slowly or doesn’t move at all, it has not yet warmed.

Then you are simply going to whip it! I would do this with a hand mixer or a larger mixer with a whisk attachment. I would not do this by hand – the honey is difficult to whip at first. Putting the honey into a mixing bowl and whipping with a hand mixer is the best way to go.

Whipped Honey – Using Crystallized vs Uncrystallized Honey

Should you use crystallized honey or uncrystallized honey?

If you have crystallized honey, I would use it for whipping. Whipping crystallized honey is better for two reasons:

1.) It whips better and produces a better result

2.) Crystallized honey can be difficult/unpleasant to use. By whipping it, you will transform this second rate honey into a sublime creamy spread for your toast.

Whipped Honey Recipe

The whipped honey recipe here is very simple. You don’t need any other ingredients besides honey. You can combine more than honey if you like. This way you could combine the flavors of your favorite honeys.

Again, if you have crystallized honey – this is optimal. Whipping the crystallized honey will result in a smooth and spreadable end result.

Besides your honey, you need a mixing bowl and a hand mixer. You could also use a stand mixer with a whisk attachment – you just need to make sure you have enough honey to sufficiently fill the standing mixer bowl.

Alternatively, I’ve seen some people use a mortar and pestle. You can use this if you have some larger more difficult crystals in your honey. Note that this method is more labor intensive.

The hand mixer method is very simple. Simply put the honey (or mixture of honey) into your mixing bowl. Mix with the hand mixer until your honey gets desired whipped consistency.

Whipped Honey Butter

One of my favorite things to eat ever is toast with honey and butter. You can use whipped honey in place of the honey. Or you can you use a whipped honey butter recipe to combine the honey and butter into one spread.

How to Store Whipped Honey

Does whipped honey need to be refrigerated?

No it does not. You can store it just like normal honey. However, keeping it refrigerated will increase the amount of time it stays creamed.

Does whipped honey go bad?

Honey will not spoil. However, it can return to being liquid honey.

How long does whipped honey last?

As mentioned above, whipped honey will not go bad but it will return to liquid honey. The specific amount of time will vary depending on parameters like temperature. To maximize the amount of time it stays creamed, keep it refrigerated. To return it to a liquid, heat the honey up by putting the jar in hot water.
